Highgate Cemetery

Postby Tripz » Fri Feb 08, 2008 2:21 am

He stares implacably uphill

towards the still gestating future,

determination and conviction

welded into his bronze features,

his back turned on the past below

where ugly urban squalor

still cohabits with the moneyed greed

he so eloquently explained,

and condemned.

All that now curtained off

by the damp and luscious foliage

of this green and pleasant land,

embalming him in its

bird- warbling peace

together

with his now faded contemporaries.

Along the simple gravel path

through the iron gates

to hell, or is it paradise?

thousands come

into this jungle cemetery

paying respects to a great thinker

or to sniff the burning sulphur

of a communist lucifer

whose ideas still smoulder,

refusing to die alongside him

in the cold marble.
