James in suitcase for 3 months

TORMENTED Heather Wardle killed herself because she could no longer live with the knowledge that her son lay dead just outside her back door, cops believe.

Devoted Heather, 39, was found hanged on Monday ' two days after she and disabled son James Hughes, 21, were reported missing.

But last night it emerged that James ' who had the mental age of a toddler ' had been dead for up to THREE MONTHS.

His decomposing body was found on Wednesday stuffed into a suitcase inside a brick shed in the family's back garden. He had to be identified from dental records.

Neighbours revealed that at least six weeks ago Heather had cancelled a social services bus that often took him to a care centre.

And it emerged that Heather had told at least one local that James had gone away to a care home "somewhere in Wales".

But bizarrely, neighbours also reported seeing a "Happy Birthday" banner in the family's front room last weekend ' when James would have celebrated his 22nd birthday. His dad Paul Hughes, 41, had been due to visit.

Heather's partner Brian Kirby, 36, and a youth were still being questioned by detectives last night after they were arrested on Wednesday. Police were given a 12-hour extension until this morning to continue interviewing them.

Friends said they had not seen Heather's 17-year-old son Daniel Thompson since Wednesday afternoon.

Detectives questioning the two suspects were trying to establish what part, if any, Heather played in James's death. She was said to be under "tremendous pressure" from having to provide James with constant care.

But police are now certain that she was driven to suicide by the knowledge that her son was dead ' and his body concealed just feet from her back door.

Forensic teams yesterday continued to comb the garden and inside of the family home in Redditch, Worcs, where Heather lived with James, her son Daniel from a previous relationship, her partner Brian and their two sons Callum, eight, and Luke, six.

The shed where the suitcase was found is just a few feet to the left of the back door. Police also erected a white tent over a patio they were digging up.

Residents on the estate in the Church Hill area of Redditch were shocked by news that the body of James ' who was just 5ft 4in and "painfully thin" ' had been found in a suitcase.

And there was confusion over exactly when the severely disabled lad was last seen, with some neighbours saying they had seen him a few weeks ago, and others saying they had not seen him for months.

One local explained how Heather had been telling people that James had gone to the care home.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: "Apparently Heather had told at least one person at the shops that James had gone away for a time to a home in Wales to give her a break from the constant care of him she had to give. But I hadn't seen him around the place for ages."

Another neighbour said: "Heather was devoted to James even though he was a burden because of his epilepsy and mental condition.

"He couldn't feed himself or go to the toilet on his own. He would just sit in his bedroom watching the kids play football on the green at the back.

"The special care bus had stopped coming for him but no one seems to be able to pinpoint exactly when they last saw him because he mainly just stayed in the house. But I and others certainly haven't set eyes on him for two months or so."

She added: "Heather would not have been able to live with the fact that James's body was outside in the shed. She must have had a mental breakdown before she killed herself."

Another local, Jason Connolly, 23, said: "I saw the youth who the police have arrested in the pub on Tuesday. He's never been in trouble with the police. But his eyes were red like he'd been crying."

Superintendent Jane Horwood, leading the police inquiry, said: "This is without doubt one of the saddest cases West Mercia Constabulary has dealt with. Events of the last few days have left the residents of Redditch shocked."

The stepfather and the brother that were being questioned have been released with no charges.

Not yet known how James died but how sad this tale is. That poor woman, poor boy and the family left behind :(
