THE STRANGE POLITICAL PRESSURES

By Carlos Tomás

*******

The father of the missing little girl was about to be assigned to a position in the team led by Gordon Brown, the British Prime-Minister additionally, sources from Portuguese authorities reveal to 24horas some "not very normal" facts

*********

"A lot of political pressures were made in this case and the investigations were seriously harmed". The statement is made by a judicial official who's been following the Madeleine McCann case since the first hour, who asked for anonymity for fear of having the same fate as Gonçalo Amaral, the Policia Judiciária (PJ) investigator who was demoted from the position of coordinator of the Criminal Investigation Department of Portimão.

"Nobody is allowed to make any comment about the case. The national director, Alípio Ribeiro, gave express orders to set up the "lei da rolha" [cork cap law, an euphemism for censorship in Portugal under Salazar], under penalty of disciplinary action being taken against anyone that provides information about the course of the investigation. The orders were transmitted by a top official of the Justice Ministry and in the name of minister Alberto Costa," the same source denounced.

After a source of minister Alberto Costa was contacted, a denial came out immediately: "We don't interfere with the judicial process. The courts are sovereignty bodies that have nothing to do with the government. It's crazy to say that we are pressuring justice".

However, as another PJ official emphasized, the truth is that it's the Ministry of Justice's competence to name the national director of that institution: "It's a political job. The national director must obey the directives of the minister, under penalty of resignation. To say that he's independent is just rhetorics".

The pressures upon the Pol├¡cia Judici├íria in the case of the little girl who disappeared on May 3 reached the point of involving the Prime-Minister itself of the United Kingdom, Gordon Brown, a friend of Gerry McCann and of his family. During a sojourn in Portugal, Brown discussed the issue with Jos├® Socrates.

Governmental sources assured 24horas that the British leader demanded maximum commitment to the investigations, stressing his conviction in the couple's innocence. This fact may have forced Alípio Ribeiro to appoint Paulo Rebelo, a national adjoint director, to head the investigations.

"The coordinator Gonçalo Amaral was punished for telling the truth. That is, the British authorities were boycotting the PJ's work and investigated only what was favourable to the McCanns. But that is still happening, without the Portuguese government or our magistrates denouncing the situation", accuses a judicial official.

The political influences of Madeleine McCann's parents went as far as the prime-minister himself, Gordon Brown, dispensing his press assessor, Clarence Mitchell, to be the McCanns' spokesperson, a fact that caused puzzlement among all the British and Portuguese press. Since he took up the position, Mitchell has been promoting a series of leads that point to the thesis that the child was abducted.

OBSTRUCTIONS TO THE INVESTIGATION

A top Scotland Yard official publicly accused the investigators of not having adequately sealed the Ocean Club apartment where Maddie slept and of having permitted the contamination of the evidence. Also, a British Member of the European Parliament said loudly that the PJ was incompetent, a fact that prompted the indignation of all Portuguese Members of the European Parliament.

The alleged obstructions to the PJ investigation started in the first hour. "When we arrived at the location, it seemed there had been an earthquake in the apartment. Everything was turned upside down, and there were more than ten people there, who had messed with everything. How could the evidence not be contaminated? Of course we isolated the location, but a lot of stuff had already been moved about", explained a source connected to the investigations.

The priority in the first day was not to collect evidence, as the same police source reveals: "The starting presupposition was that the little girl had disappeared. Only later was the investigation directed towards the occurrence of a homicide or an abduction. The time that was lost was fatal. But the McCanns allowed for the destruction of evidence that would be fundamental to clearing up what happened".

The lack of the forensics that are still blocked in a Birmingham laboratory, as well as the fact that the records of the phone calls made by the McCanns and the friends they had dinner with in the day of the disappearance of the child were not sent to the PJ, are just two of the examples mentioned by several investigators as "not very normal facts".

The direct intervention of the British ambassador in the investigatons and the phone calls made from several British ministry offices to the Ministry of Justice and to the Portuguese Prime-Minister are other examples pointed out by the investigators "of the boycott being carried out against the investigations by British political and police authorities".

******

box:

GERRY'S POWER

In our October 20 edition, 24horas reported exclusively about Gerry McCann's web of power. Maddie's father is a member of an extremely important state committee of experts on nuclear energy, an industry that is fundamental in the United Kingdom and that has Richard Branson as a big supporter. Curiously, the millionaire was one of the most enthusiastic supporters (mainly with money) of the fund created by the McCanns. Besides, the brother of the British prime-minister works in the nuclear branch. And it was him, John, who introduced the McCanns to Gordon Brown. Too many coincidences only?

From Joaohonesto
http://the3arguidos.makeforum.org/how-c ... -t172.html

First of all, the translation from the Publico article that came out in today's UK press is far from complete.

This was what's published:

-----------

It was a moment. An unexpected event thwarted the prospect of desire. Madeleine cries as she wakes from her sleep. Her fear makes itself heard. She has to be silenced. Violence, suffocation probably. And unexpected death. All over in minutes. Now he had to get her out of there. Close the door. Flee as fast as he could.

The theory this is the explanation behind Madeleine's McCann's disappearance, the night of May 3, was practically ruled out previously by police investigators. Now though, it's gaining strength in the centre of the investigation.

-----------

and this is the full translation of the beginning of the Publico article [whenever the translation above is correct I use it]:

-----------------

It was easy to recognize the routines of the McCann couple. They rarely left the Praia da Luz resort where they were spending their holidays in the Algarve. They went for walks and had meals at more or less set times in the company of their group of friends. The children went to bed early like they do in the UK. The night was for the adults. It was easy for whomever was observing to know exactly the best time to get into the apartment ' at dusk, when Kate and Gerry distanced themselves in order to have dinner and there were fewer people in the streets. The opportunity would come, it would be easy to come close, to touch, to smell the fragile little blonde girl with big eyes.

It was a moment. But an unexpected event thwarted the prospect of desire. The British child cries as she wakes from her sleep. The fear [of the abductor] that it [the cry] is heard. She has to be silenced. Violence, suffocation probably. And unexpected death. Now he had to get her out of there. Close the door. Flee as fast as he could.

The theory this is the explanation behind Madeleine's McCann's disappearance, the night of May 3, was practically ruled out previously by police investigators. Now though, it's gaining strength in the centre of the investigation. [continues]

-------------

about the rest of the article, suffice to say that it doesn't have a single direct quote nor name a source name.

thus my question: what credibility would you give to such an article, irrespective of it favoring or not the McCann camp?

IMO its credibility is exactly 0,000%.

In fact, I find this article the worst EVER published about the McCann case anywhere. I even think the reason the ferouciously pro-McCann British press quotes so little of may be because even they were embarrassed by this unbelievable piece of garbage.

and one more question: did any of you feel a pang of sympathy for the poor paedophile's predicament? the authors tried

-------------

sorry all for only posting this here now, but believe me, for these last few days I simply haven''t know which way to turn.

anyway, I think that we should make an effort so that this Publico outrage is exposed. besides posting the thread here and in the MF I've already emailed a complaint about the article to Publico, and am now getting ready to file a more formal complaint about it to their ombudsman, based mainly on the fact that this is simply not journalism, and insisting on the extreme bad taste of presenting the pedophile's point of view.

and if anyone else here would muster anough outrage to complain to Publico through this email:

cartasdirector@publico.pt

it wouldn't hurt our cause I'm sure. Complaints by English speakers would be even better than from Portuguese ones

and finally, about my translations and ozzys being put in the same thread, please go ahead! I'm saying this here because I can't even find at the moment the PM I received on the subject, so "baralhado" I am at the moment.

Full translation of today's coverage of the McCann case in Publico, "the respected Portuguese daily":

---------

---------

oops, there's this also:

----------

------------

Yes, that's true, there's not a single word in today's edition of the "respected" Publico about the Maddie case, which makes it AGAIN the only Portuguese paper, or indeed media outlet, that doesn't mention it ' and this on the day of the only real development in the case for almost 3 months, the PJ trip to the UK, that is making headlines around the world!

Remember that, in its now famous article published to days ago with which, for some obscure reason, the "respected" Publico thought it was a good idea to enter the fray ("PJ adfmits innocence of McCAnn couple"), it is said that according to their unquoted and unnamed police sources, the PJ is taking Jane Tanner's sighting of Bundleman very seriously, so much so that the abductor hypothesis is "gaining ever more strength in the nucleus of the investigation"; according to the "respected" Publico, "The beliefs upon which the police based themselves became more fragile" because of Tanner's testimony; and, thanks to Tanner, says the "respectable" Publico, "The probability of her [Maddie] disappearance being the work of an intruder is now being seriously considered again". The following paragraph is also part of the article published by the "respected" Publico and based on their unquoted and unnamed police sources:

-------

Going against the expectations about the usefulness of the results of the analysis carried out by the Birmingham laboratory of the evidence collected in the Praia da Luz apartments and in the vehicles [plural?] of the MacCann [sic] couple and their friends in order to clear up the case, some PJ officials consider that these kinds of analysis will contribute nothing to give new clues to the police.

--------

Oh yes, I was almost forgetting this one: leaving absolutely no stone unturned as regards the evidence the PJ may or may not have, according to the "respected" Publico's unquoted and unnamed police sources, the PJ "also doubts the dogs used by the British police may have detected a cadaver odour".

Well, what could we expect from "journalists" who can't even spell "McCann" correctly?

And now the last paragraph of the article, in which the authors give in again to their fictional vein:

---------

In Praia da Luz, the shutters are drawn and the closed door of the apartment from which Maddie disappeared [this is a faithful translation of the original, the authors are not exactly the new Saramagos] The tourists are gone, the streets are semi-deserted and the Ocean Club shut down until the next summer season. But the journalists drop by, once in a while, in the attempt to find some new news, and the locals still look around, searching for Maddie.

---------

Yesterday, it should be reminded, the "respected" Publico's coverage of the case amounted to what was basically a self-congratulatory piece of "journalism" about how their article of the previous day had been innocently picked up by the Sun: you could feel the pride felt by the "respected" Publico for this achievement, for them being blessed by the august Sun must be the equivalent to a knighthood in journalism!

Still, the fact that the "respected" Publico didn't publish anything about the MacCann, sorry, McCann case may be due to the fact that the article's two intrepid authors, Paula Torres de Carvalho e Idálio Revez, are busy dreaming up the next installment of the poor pedophile's odissey; the part perhaps in which he's walking leasurely towards Murat's house and is seen by Jane Tanner.

So, inspired by Bluto's brilliant "Predator Paedophile Modus Operandi" satire (http://forums.mirror.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=29136) I came up with this suggestion for that part of the plot:

Upon glimpsing the absolutely ravishing beauty of Jane Tanner, Bundleman starts having profound doubts about his necrophiliac pedophile tendencies, and goes through moments of intense anguish during which he considers disposing of the corpse and approach Tanner with a "Hello handsome! Wanna go have a drink?", but then accepts his cursed fate (his "fado", as we say in Portugal) and resumes walking leasurely towards Murat's house.

Anyway, we'll just have to wait and see what the "respected" Publico will come up with next regarding the MacCann, sorry, McCann case.

From joaohonesto on the same thread:

there's two quite different takes in the article.

one is:

-----------

The team want to familiarise themselves with the pioneering methods used

-------------

read: the poor third world cops coming to marvel at the UK's scientific advancement; the other is:

-----------

to make sure the tests have not been manipulated by someone linked to the suspects. "We want to be sure all the information that reaches us has not previously been interfered with."

------------

now which one to believe is up to each one of us

by the way, I wouldn't be too much under the impression that similar tests haven't been carried out in Portugal also, so that it might be possible to countercheck the FSS's results.

What I know is that according to PT law, for forsensics evidence to be admissable in court, it MUST be carried out at the Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal, that obviously has all the capability necessary to carry out any such analysis (and much faster than the FSS!). So the unlikely chance the FSS might be tempted to tweak the forensics a bit might have embarrassing results.

posted by joaohonesto. It's the translation of the first part of an article that was published in Visão, the leading Portuguese weekly newsmagazine. The article is titled "The PJ's secret traps" and was published in the Nov. 15-21 edition.

----------------------------------

Chapter I – Bluffing in interrogations

The McCanns' weakest link

It wasn't by accident that the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) decided to interrogate Kate McCann first, on September 6, when it wanted to designate Maddie's parents as arguidos. Two days before, in one of the rooms of the PJ's department in Portimão, the conclusion was reached that she'd be the McCanns' weakest link. And the decision that was taken in that meeting, who drew together the then coordinator Gonçalo Amaral ' now replaced by Paulo Rebelo ' the adjoint national director Guilhermino da Encarnação and several inspectors, among them Vítor Almeida and João Pereira.

Maddie's mother profile pointed to her being more capable of carelessness [descuidos] ' or regrets. That is, she was the ideal person to fall into a psychological trap. So she started to be heard as a witness: the impact would be greater when, during the questioning, she'd hear the questions about the death of her daughter, the accusation of hiding the corpse and the news that she was going to be designated as arguida. Not everyone agreed with the strategy. In Gonçalo Amaral's mind, guarantees someone who heard him during those days, Kate was the couple's strongest link: he saw her as a woman of strength, even by the way she had sacrificed her career for her children.

At the end of the several hours long questioning of Kate, the inspectors were sure of two things. One: There would be no confessions. The other: Kate wouldn't break. "She cried after several questions, she lowered her head, she pulled herself together and immediately raised her head. At those moments, you could tell she was stronger, as if she was telling us she could take anything", says the PJ source.

Police interrogations, such as the ones in Maddie's case, must be prepared in every detail. The questions to be asked to the arguidos are the investigators' card hands [cartadas], but, just as in poker, the success of a less successful game is measured by a good bluff and by the reading of the opponent's weaknesses. Sometimes it's necessary to estimate how far the opponent will go. So questions are made with sudden gestures and by raising the voice tone, everything eye to eye. Always looking for the spontaneous answer. In the Maddie case, there were allegedly muscled questionings, such as the one of Sergei Malinka, Robert Murat's Russian friend. Shouting inspectors, punches on the table and other unspecified sounds were heard in the back of the PJ in Portimão.

The Judiciária didn't go that far with the child's parents. There was no shouting and pauses were made every four hours, anticipating the coming into effect of the new Penal Process Code. Obstacles added to the pauses needed for translation. "The spontaneity was lost", says a PJ source. Today, the PJ also thinks it took too long to designate the McCann couple as arguidos. "The four months allowed them to solidify their convictions".

In the current phase of the case of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, Paulo Rebelo and Guilhermino da Encarnação, who are responsible for the investigation, must discover new leads and find out how to solve a case that threatens to soil the PJ's reputation.

From the MF

Sic Online

PJ in Leicester (video)

According to this SIC report, live from Leicester police HQ (where the 4 PJ met with 5 British experts), the visit seems to a very different objective than anything being reported in the British media (varying between a full-scale PJ surrender to a more charitable visit to marvel at the UK's scientific prowesses).

It says "one of the theories is" that the PJ thinks "these results may be different from the ones provided by the Portuguese experts at the beginning of the investigation" and, "if that's the case, the PJ should want to know how did the British experts arrived at these results and what is their importance to the investigation."

The word used to describe their meeting, "discuss├úo", does tend to support the idea the PJ is not exactly happy with the FSS's services, and apparently not only because of the 2640 hours and counting it's taken so far to do a couple of forensic analysis instead of 36 hours (talk about fraudulent advertising!). It does seem to imply the PJ may have caught the FSS "com a m├úo na massa", engaging in some erm, wrongdoing with the samplesÔǪ perhaps some people said "They won't notice anything, after all they're just some *** Cops"ÔǪ but maybe it's just me being too cynical.

The report says says something else that was a complete surprise to me: it says the PJ wants the results because it means to interview the Tapas WHILE on this trip to the UK! The rogatory letters are apparently ready and only the results are missing ' thanks to the world's slowest and hopefully nothing worse forensics lab.

From Joaohonesto:
http://forums.mirror.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=30977

Yesterday it was the Sun with a story lifted from Diario de Noticias, in which a trivial case of a threat of abduction was turned into an actual abduction of a true Maddie look-alike in the Algarve.

Today the Daily Mail and This Is London carry the same story about the "Guilt of the McCanns" book with a FALSE headline:

-------

Now Portuguese author claims Madeleine and the twins were NEVER in holiday apartment

----------

In the corresponding article, the only part relevant to the title is this statement, equally FALSE:

-----------------

() He [the book's author] also claims the McCanns holiday apartment showed no signs of having had children in it. ()

--------------

because as it happens the author says NOTHING of the sort in the book, and I know because I've read it all.

But no one has to take my word for it, because ' in further proof that the MF is read by EVERYONE involved in the case ' the source of this article was obviously the translations that me and Li posted here of the book's excerpts that came out in last Sunday's Correio da Manhã.

So here's Li's translation of the relevant part of the book that the shameless British journos decided to falsify:

------------

It [the apartment] does not seem a place of holidays where three children run and jump the whole day.

http://forums.mirror.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=30185

-----------

and my translation of the same part:

-------------

The apartment didn't look like a holiday location where three children jump up and down all day.

http://forums.mirror.co.uk/vie.....highlight=

-------------

now shameless British journos, if the author says the apartment was so tidy it didn't look like it had children jumping up and down in it all day, is just a tiny weeny bit different than stating categorically that Maddie was NEVER (emphasized in capitals in the Mail title) in the apartment, wouldn't you say? are there absolutely no minimum requirements to be a journo in the UK nowadays?

And, since you're falsifying so shamelessly the translations posted here by Portuguese citizens as your source material, you'd better be warned that according to the law, at least in Portugal, you can't do that. And let's leave it at that.

Because, of course, what anger we translators may feel about this despicable behaviour, should pale into insignificance compared to what the author of the "A Culpa dos McCann" book, Manuel Catarino, and its publisher, Guerra & Paz, must be feeling right now about this who knows, perhaps you'll even hear from them one of these days or the privilege of seeking legal reparation is reserved for Clarrie boy nowadays on our planet?

------------

Daily Mail:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pag.....rtComments

This Is London:

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/.....article.do

---------

just as a final note, it's extraordinary that this falsification of my and/or Li's translations of the book happens exactly the day after a Portuguese poster drops out of sky into the forum, lands in a thread I posted and in his/her first comment starts accusing me of falsifying translations

[added: more complete Li translation of the relervant part:

The policemen, trained to look in for the minimum details, observe curious how the house is impeccably tidy.It does not seem a place of holidays where three children run and jump the whole day.

The sofa has not one single crease and chairs are positioned meticulously. There is any clothes forgotten or out of the place, not even toys in sight.Only the cuddle cat, that was always with Maddie, is now tight in Kate's hands. The kitchen is clean, without the smallest vestige of remains of milk or children food. ]

Postby KazLux » Thu Apr 17, 2008 7:36 am

From Joaohonesto:
http://forums.mirror.co.uk/viewtopic.ph ... ht=#794464

Such has been the disgusting persecution conducted against me in the MF in the last couple of days, by rhodes03 and with the full tolerance, at least, of the Mods, namely the intense pressure by the said poster to reveal my true identity, that I feel I have to CONFESS who I am, for the reasons explained below:

My reasoning is this: if rhodes could be convinced that I am indeed Robert Murat, what may other people in "upper echelons" to his, think I am? One thing they seem to be sure about: there is something sinister behind me.

So (and thank you Mods for allowing a a touch of paranoia to enter my life), these past few days the thought actually occurred me that perhaps I should start to worry about my personal safety. How can I know that someone out there has suspicions about me equal to rhodes, but is in the position to do something about what he considers a real risk?

And that's the reason that I feel myself forced to make a CONFESSION here in the Mirror forum, thinking of my own (and my family's) personal safety, in order to try to dispell any doubts that indeed in my case there is an entirely innocent explanation for what I may or may not be doing here in the forum.

(hope Clarrie is listening, or that someone briefs in on this)

OK. So I live in Porto, or Oporto as usually said in English, you know, the city of Port wine, that nectar of the gods we kindly export so much to the UK. And in this wonderful city I live near Parque da Cidade, a beautiful park that extends all the way to the ocean (the Atlantic one), in fact it's the only city park in the world to do so.

I'll give more precise details: anyone who wants to come to my modest house, the instructions I give are always this: drive down beautiful Avenida da Boavista until the wonderful Fonte da Moura intersection and then turn right at the second lights afterwards. After this, I tell them, perhaps it's best they give me a call for further instructions, because due to the one-way streets it's a bit confusing to reach my house in the center of wonderful Bairro (now Urbanização) António Aroso.

That enough for the moment? Anyone want to know my exact street address? Telephone number? E-mail? Identity card? Passport? Gas bill? Last income tax statement? Bank account at Barclays Bank, whose nearest office is at the intersection named above? My name? The name of my wife? Of our two daughters, who'll be coming home for Christmas? Details about my family? Where I was born and when? My fingerprints? The names of my two dogs?

Clarrie? MI5? Scotland Yard? Martin Brunt? rhodes03? Anyone want to know more?

(thank you Mods for allowing things to go this far)

Of course probably this will increase further the suspicions, but how else can I prove that I am who I really am? Anyone care to come for a visit and check personally? Look under my bed? Fortunately that's very easy and expensive to arrange: Porto's airport, Pedras Rubras, is very well served by EasyJet flights connecting to UK cities (a direct flight to Bristol is now available, for instance).

And one reason I know suspicions may increase is because, out of pure stubornness, I WON'T say what I do for a living, something with which some people here seem to have a morbid interest about. I'll just say, again, that it's nothing to be ashamed about, on the contrary, and in fact was just a few seconds away from stating what I do for a living in a recent thread dedicated to the subject, when something else caught my attention and I didn't.

And fortunately so, because now I WON'T SAY what I do for a living, you sick voyeurists!

I'll say though that every poster that contacted me, once we got engaged in a pleasant conversation, I immediately revealed, without being asked, what I do for a living.

And I'll just add this about my sources, that seem to some people to be proof positive that I have a hotline to Alipio Ribeiro: my sources, ALL of my sources, are Portuguese media reports, that can be divided into three categories: TV, newspapers and magazines. That's ALL, I don't have A SINGLE SOURCE apart from these, and namely let me state this very clearly: NOTHING I have ever posted in the forum has ever come from a direct source, ALL OF IT came from these indirect sources.

With the proverbial exception to confirm the rule: the ONLY time I ever posted something in the forum that was said to me personally, so it can be said to come from a direct source, was when my sister called me telling me the breaking news that the PJ was flying to the UK the next morning. And before rhodes starts writing in his notebook "Confessed sister works for the PJ", let me say that my sister knew about this because she happened to WATCH ON TV (TVI) the beginning of that everning's newscast, that started with this news.

I could go further: I actually imposed myself the restriction that I simply won't deal with direct sources, even if I had them, because, since I AM NOT A JOURNALIST I DO NOT HAVE DIRECT SOURCES. These are the rules I set myself ' only indirect sources, that are available in the press or TV, because I don't have any direct ones. And let me add that there's more indirect sources than I can get my hands at, what I least need now are direct sources, I'm completely overloaded as it is.

And what I did then regarding this 'PJ flying to UK tomorrow' news was simply to write a post telling exactly and nothing more than this: that my sister had called me telling me she'd just watched on TVI that the PJ was flying to the UK the next day.

OK, paranoid minds? Or does this still sound suspicious to you?

And I'll reveal one more example about my sources, and my modus operandi, a situation that I find extraordinary: it involves me coming out of my house, walking down Rua da Vilarinha with one of my dogs [rhodes: suspiciously, dog goes with him] to the nearest newstand (Tabacaria Fonte da Moura, I'm sure Mr. Augusto will appreciate the free publicity) and checking the press.

And in one such recent trip I did something I never thought I'd do in my life:I bought a copy of a magazine called TV Guia, something that only a Portuguese can appreciate in terms of embarrassment potential) because it had an article with an interview with a Portuguese lawyer about the McCann case,in which he said that according to our law the Saints of the 21st Century could get up to 10 years for child abandonment. He was just stating what the law says, apparently nothing could be more uncontroversial than that.

So I when I came back home, still followed by by dog [rhodes: hmmm, dog follows suspect back home], I translated the article, posted it in the forum. Could anything be simpler? Is it my fault that British journalism is in such a state of smelly putrefaction that the Daily Express made my translation the next day's headline? (how can I be 100% sure? easy: because an accidental typo allowed me to confirm that indeed the DE liftedthe story from my translation; as we say here: "The Portuguese language [names included] is very treacherous"; and no, no, of course not: no check in the mail from the UK, not even a simple thank you note, manners aren't simply what they used to be)

And keep the questions coming in, paranoids! The offer still stands that I made to rhodes: try to GUESS what I do for a living and if you're right I'll CONFESS you're right. Until then, it will take a super Amaral Goncalo to make me CONFESS in this forum what I do.

Meanwhile, I hope this post does some good at clearing some doubts vigilantes of this forum at the MMU or elsewhere may be having ' nothing to see here guys, move along, it's just a regular person! Metodo 3 sleuths, nope, no Maddie abductor traced to Porto, Portugal, and hopefully it won't reach a point where I'll be AFRAID TO LEAVE MY OWN HOUSE!

For instance, I'd like to place squarely the blame on the Mods that I had to say to my wife yesterday:"I have to do something about that thread, otherwise tomorrow's headlines in the UK may scream MURAT EXPOSED AT THE MIRROR FORUM or even MADDIE ABDUCTOR TRACED TO OPORTO".

Fortunately I came up with the idea of declaring that I was indeed Murat ' and what followed made tears literally come to my eyes, I don't remember ever having laughed so much in my life! So I guess there's a good side to everything!

Wait, wait, I find I must CONFESS something else: I spent quite a bit of time of the forum (and doing associated work), yes, perhaps even more than I should, but I actually enjoy doing it, and think my work is appreciated ' is that a crime? And where do I get my time: well, for instance, by NOT spending a minute watching doing things like watching football games, TV, DVDs, by not going out to have a drink, etc., because I actually PREFER to spend my free time at the forum, some people go fishing and I like to participate in the forum ' is that a crime? Plus, I almost feel afraid to say, I do think my country is under a disgusting attack and would like to do my bit to try to reddress things a little ' is that a crime?

Enough CONFESSIONS here for everybody's taste?

Can I feel that I can live my life without the paranoia of imagining me the victim of a "mysterious accident"?

One final confession: the dog's name is Flash [rhodes: Flash! Could there ever be a more suspicious do name than that? Case closed!]

Visão: The McCanns' Strategic Withdrawal

Maddie's parents decided to become invisible. Before, they talked all the time. Now, they only agreed to taping a Christmas message because their assessors insisted on it. SÁBADO was in the UK and saw how their days are like ' between their hospital, the creche, the twins' swimming pool and the huge household where the only room that still looks the same is Madeleine's.

------------

The night has fallen. It's 2┬║C, but the cold doesn't stop Gerry McCann from covering on his bike the more than 13 kilometres separating his house from the hospital he works at. At 17:55 he shows up, wearing a helmet, in a dark sports outfit, grey tennis and a backpack on his back. In the final straight part of his course he doesn't need to pedal anymore. He already has acquired momentum and needs only to let himself slide down the slope of the street. Had he not been intercepted, he'd only stop only that the No 5 door. Due to SABADO's request, he brakes at the entrance of the alley that gives access to seven households (the McCanns' is the largest), already on sight ' and at reach ' of police protection. As soon as he realizes it's a journalist, he interrupts the dialogue. Well behaved, he promises to talk to Clarence Mitchell, the couple's PR, while he pushes the bike. In a matter of seconds he disappears beyond the house's gate, with the two policewomen already outside the patrol car, with crossed arms, open legs, ready to avoid more inconveniences.

A few hours later he'd talk indeed with Clarence Mitchell. And Clarence Mitchell talked with SÁBADO: "Gerry wasn't particularly happy with your approach". And the interview? "Let me see. We'll consider it for the weekend, but the answer will surely be no". And it was. "They don't even want to see journalists in front of them and I also think it's best they don't", he explained after five days. "We're not going to get into that agenda now".

And they haven't, in fact ' the strategy of the McCann couple has now become to appear as little as possible; now, they want to escape the journalist's attention and retire to their life in the small Rothley village.

That's the way things are ' controlled to the smallest detail ' since Clarence Mitchell took over as the McCanns' spokesperson, on September 18. Nothing comes out of them or reaches them without his permission. After the interview to the Antena 3 Spanish TV channel (on October 14) Kate and Gerry McCann never talked to journalists again. "Even that we did only because Metodo 3 [the detective agency hired by the McCanns] thought it would be good to publicize the case, the pictures and the telephone number in Spain", states the assessor. "And even so some people even got hold of some psychologists in order to say Kate's tears were faked". Justifying himself with the arguido status and the "nonsense" that according to him are published in the press, Clarence Mitchell decided to implement the cork cap law [Portuguese expression; means strict gagging orders or censorship]. Nobody talks anymore. End of story.

At the same time, the McCanns' spokesperson handled the media. "When I arrived here there were about 20 TV vehicles and dozens of journalists. It was completely crazy. The first thing I said was: 'There will be only one briefing a week and it will be in London. If anything new happens we'll be available, otherwise there's no reason for them to be here bothering the residents'. After two or three days they finally got the message and disappeared," Clarence Mitchell tells SÁBADO. An ITV reporter confesses: "We try not to bother them, otherwise we know we won't get anything". The reporters working for tabloid papers reserve him another adjective: arrogant. The assessor ridicules a lot of questions he's asked and calls the news desks criticizing the news that are not to his liking. A journalist from a Sunday paper accuses: "He's got the monopoly on information and all the British press is afraid of him".

Additional comment made by Joaohonesto

A quick comment: finally some journalism about the McCann case! And it took a Portuguese journalist to travel to the UK, where she immediately met Gerry on the street, and had no trouble whatsoever asking Clarence Mitchell QUESTIONS! Something that Today's journalists seem completely incapable to do, to ask QUESTIONS! Go Isabel Lacerda and Portuguese journalism!

The whole article is interesting (and it comes with detailed graphics and maps of the McCanns surroundings in Rothley, such as the way to the twins' swimming pool, where the McCanns shop and where the nearest hairdresser is, etc.) but at the moment this is all I have time for.

Hernâni Carvalho: Maddie is Dead?

http://forums.mirror.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=36115

MADDIE IS DEAD?

-------

Everything seems to indicate it. The locations where the vestiges were found and the results of the analyses made from the samples point to a scenario of death

---------

How did the death of the little girl happen and where is the corpse, only its perpetrators know. Maddie's corpse might explain almost everything. Lab specialists use to say that the body "talks about the crime". But in the absence of a body

The result of the forensics that arrived from the UK cross-checked with the forensics done in Portugal by the Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal doesn't seem to leave any doubts to the inspectors. The blood found in the McCanns' car is likely Madeleine's, the same as the vestiges detected in the house the child disappeared from without leaving a trace. But without a body, without confessions and without other clues, the doubts will leave any accusation in court with its hands tied. The truth is that the British dogs (presented by the British police as super detectives, almost infallible) detected corpse odour in the McCanns' apartment, in Kate's clothing, in the cuddly toy that had been washed days before, and in the keys of the car used by the couple. A car rented more than twenty days after the little girl disappeared. In the trunk of the Renault Scenic, the dogs again found biological vestiges from a DNA matching Maddie's.

If a charge is to be pressed, judging by what sources close to the process tell us, it will be at most one of negligent manslaughter. Something that is coherent with the several news that have been circulating about the investigators' beliefs. An accident, followed by the hiding of the corpse and simulation of an abduction. In police circles, some are saying that the authorities are still waiting for a stroke of luck. But "things are going bad when one is waiting for a stroke of luck," said Barra da Costa, a former PJ chief inspector, to TVMais. In the next few weeks, the questionings in the UK may take place. This if we're to believe the rogatory letters will be able to "take off" for London. If they get there, the apprehension of Kate's diary may take place too. And the pact of silence of the friends of the McCanns may collapse. As TVMais informed in due time, the content of the diaries is already known by the investigators, but its apprehension depends on a judicial authorization. If there is to be a trial, it will never take place in Portugal. The case goes to the UK and it will be there that we will see the treatment of that country's justice system will give the case.

Kate McCann sent a Christmas message to father Jos├® Pacheco, but the Praia da Luz priest cannot bear even hearing talking about the couple and says he's upset. Father Jos├® Pacheco got to be known for having handed over the keys to the Praia da Luz church to the McCann couple during their stay in Portugal.

Despite much talk about the "moral and spiritual support" given to the couple by the Church for four months, the truth is that father Jos├® Pacheco confirmed to TVMais that he never heard the couple in confession. In fact, one of the paradoxical behaviors of the McCann couple was precisely their proximity to the Anglican priest at the expense of the Catholic father Jos├® Pacheco. At the time, there were some who explained this with cultural issues. TVMais knows that PJ officials have already heard father Jos├® Pacheco and that he keeps stating he doesn't know anything about the fate of the little girl. It should be reminded that the British tracking dogs, specialized in detecting odour from corpses, signaled the outside area of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz as being one of the places where Maddie's body may have passed through. A source from the parish guaranteed to TVMais that last November the PJ fine-combed the inside of the church, as well as some surrounding areas.

The McCanns remain off stage. If they talked to TV on Christmas eve it was because Clarence Mitchell, their image assessor, imposed that they do so. He who orders is he who knows ["Manda quem sabe", Portuguese expression] The text and the photos were made by another friend of the couple, John O'Connor. Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Waters' programs, seen by many millions around the world, were back listed. The McCanns didn't want this support nor this exposure. They preferred to give an interview to Spanish television Antena 3. Allegedly to give visibility to a campaign that should have been launched in Portugal, Spain and North Africa. The interview is out, but the campaign is not. The only ones campaigning are the operationals of Metodo 3, the Spanish detective agency that has already announced the presence of Maddie in the most diverse places of the planet. Some say the McCanns have already wasted 414,000 euros in private detectives. The contract with Metodo 3 ends only in April.

MURAT IS AFRAID

Robert Murat, the first arguido of the Maddie case, says he is "being watched and fearful". The information comes from Francisco Pagarete, the lawyer of the Portuguese-British. Murat is unaware of which organization the people who have been following him and photographing him from inside cars work for. Pagarete confirms that the PJ is already aware of this. One of the possibilities is that they are investigators from the Metodo 3 private detectives agency.

But TVMais recalls that, during the Summer, journalist Paulo Reis, who worked for the "Times" in the Maddie case, was followed and photographed by individuals (that have since been identified) that do not work for Metodo 3. In fact, at this time Metodo 3 was not yet "in the field" Others were.

Robert Murat is still waiting for his arguido status to be lifted. He swears he only knew about the disappearance of the little girl in the next morning and guarantees he was at home with his mother. The house and car of Murat and his mother were already searched twice. Nothing was found.

KATE NEVER SUSPECTED MURAT

Kate McCann never talked publicly about Murat. Even after he was designated as arguido, she appealed for calm. She never showed mistrust regarding the arguido. As for her friends Rachael Oldfield, Fiona Payne and Russell O'Brien, they insist on having seen him when they were looking for Madeleine. And they say that he introduced himself and helped in the searches. But these friends only remembered this in July.

Just a few moments ago on SIC, Moita Flores (retired PJ officer, mayor of Santar├®m, author and scriptwriter) revealed he's been writing the script for a TV series inspired by the McCann case, to be shown still this year in Portugal!

Moita Flores said it's not going to be a chronicle ("chronicles are for journalists"), but that will be "inspired" by the McCann case, adding that the idea is to give THE POLICE'S perspective of it.

I was informed a while ago (thanks Rita!) that today at 16:00 a program about the Maddie case was broadcast on the France Culture channel of Radio France, the second in a series of programs about Portugal. I haven't heard it yet but it should be very interesting, namely because to the best of my knowledge it's the first time the Maddie case is addressed in a "serious", intellectual context, as indicated by some of Portugal's top writers and commentators speaking to France's state broadcaster. Below is a rough translation of the synopsis included in the Radio France site:

-----------

Tuesday January 29: « Au pays de Maddie »

The 'fait divers' became planet-wide. Never in the history of mankind was the disappearance of a child so commented. Maddie McCann, missing on May 3 2007, at the Ocean Club, a residence at the heart of the small fishing village of Praia da Luz, has not been found yet And the case continues to raise the interest of all the world.

All the elements are assembled to transform this tragedy into a true modern melodrama. A drama opposing two nations, Portugal and England, that took the air of a continuous serial whose plot oscillates between an Agatha Christie novel and a John Le Carr├® one.

First, the setting: the Algarve, that tourist region of the south of Portugal, often praised as representing a paradise. Praia da Luz means "beach of light". Here there's no fog nor swamps like in other stories, but houses bleached with lime and comfortable resorts housing holiday makers from all over the world and mainly British ones, so much so that the village is known to be the epicenter of what in Portugal is called "little England".

Afterwards, the McCanns, both aged 39, both doctors: she, with an Hitchthingy-like blondeness, the incarnation of the good countryside bourgeoisie; him, Gerry, the fervently Catholic cardiologist. Finally, the media echo, that made our colleague Marie Huret of 'l'Express' say, "This story, it's the Vologne at the time of globalization, the Gr├®gory affair in Mondovision", this being so since the victims (the McCann couple) became the main suspects.

As it happens, last August 11 the investigation of the Portuguese PJ took a decisive turn by orienting itself towards Maddie's parents: suspicious blood traces and "biological vestiges" were found in the apartment they occupied at the time of the disappearance. Thus it wouldn't be an abduction anymore. Officially the McCanns were declared "arguidos" (suspects) on September 9 and from then on the majority of the Portuguese were invaded by the poison of doubt and the British public opinion radicalized itself against PortugalÔǪ "This case is now 'rotten'!", the novelist L├¡dia Jorge confides to us, fascinated by the mythological dimension, directing us to the reading that Roland Barthes might make of this 'fait divers'.

Luc de Saint John Webb, manager of the restaurant A Fortaleza in Praia da Luz ;

Helder, retired fisherman ;

Helder Nunes, director of the weekly « Barlavento » ;
Frankie & Ella, British music-hall singers;
Nancy, owner of the pub «The Bull » in Praia da Luz;
Eduardo Cintra Torres, media observer for the reference daily « Publico » ;
Manuel Villaverde Cabral, professor of political science;
Lucilla, owner of the boarding house « Aurora » in Praia da Luz;
Mário Cláudio, novelist.

The program can be heard at the above link of France Culture site for a month or its podcast downloaded for a week.

My suggestion is that all French speakers out there cooperate in translating the program, or describe what's said in it, in the comments of this thread (I'm guessing most of the Portuguese guests of the program speak French). The program is an hour long, so it should take a bit on an effort to get it all out into English!

Meanwhile, having never heard before of the Vologne/Gr├®gory affair in France that the McCann case is compared to in the program, I've dug up some information about it, and it is a pretty bizarre affair too!

--------

() the tragic real-life murder case of Gregory Villemin, four years old, found tied up and drowned in a French river, "La Vologne" (which runs in the Vosges) on October 16th, 1984. () the Villemin story had been a sensation in the news for several years, as the French police had failed to solve the case and as new episodes continued to succeed one another: the mother was accused of infanticide; anonymous letters relating to the case were spread all over the city; the boy's uncle was accused of the crime, then discharged before being assassinated by the father.

The Long Shadow of 'The Crow'

For years, the Villemin family was terrorized by an anonymous letter writer who claimed responsibility for their little boy's death. Now a French court struggles to resolve this tale of murder and revenge.
