BABY MONITOR SPARKS CITY BOMB ALERT

10:30 - 29 May 2008

A shopping centre packed with lunchtime shoppers had to be evacuated in a bomb alert - sparked by a beeping baby monitor.

Leicestershire police ordered part of The Shires, along with stores in the High Street, to be cleared after they received reports of a suspicious package at about 11.40am yesterday.

It was found in the post office in The Shires and bomb disposal experts from the Ministry of Defence were called in. Checks revealed nothing suspicious and the cordon was lifted at about 1.45pm.

A police spokeswoman said: "It was a baby monitor with low batteries that was bleeping."

The incident saw shoppers, staff from stores and other workers, cleared from the area.

Tom Nathan, general manager of The Shires, said the alert caused only a short disruption.

He said: "The evacuation was a precautionary measure, and it has since been reported as a non-threatening item.

"However, we take any suspicious activity very seriously.

"Retailers experienced a short delay before everyone returned to operate business as normal.

"The safety and security of our staff, customers and retailers is the number-one priority for The Shires, and we work closely with the police on any security matters."

Some, however, raised concerns about the actions of the police, arguing the whole of The Shires should have been evacuated immediately, rather than a specific area.

Tina Cook, of Leire Street, off Melton Road, in Belgrave, was shopping with her children, Kira, aged five, and Kalya, three.

She said: "A lot of people were walking in and they weren't trying to evacuate the whole building.

"I looked at my kids and thought, 'I need to get them out'.

"The police should have evacuated the whole building as soon as possible."

However, police defended their actions, saying they had carefully considered the size of the area to close off and the safety of the public was always the top priority.

And this mother agreed to her home adress & childrens names being reported because.........???
