Need help to find jazz artist.....

Postby margaret » Thu May 29, 2008 2:47 pm

This is a bit embarrassing but since there are so many people here someone might be able to point me in the right direction.....

Last Summer (I know l said it was embarrassing  ) Jonathon Ross played on his Sat morning radio 2 show an almost instrumental song by a jazz artist. I actually thought it was a recent record because it was so good anyway he said this man had been dead for quite a few years and he had a double barrelled surname OR an initial before his surname...

I did search for him on youtube and there were some tributes to him playing the song, then l went to buy an album and whoosh clunk the name has escaped me and bugged me ever since!

Anyone any ideas?

Could this be him . There are not many Jazz musicians with a double-barrelled name.

www.heckstall-smith.com/content/home.htm.

I remember ,years and years ago, he used to busk on Hungerford bridge in London before he hit the big time. He played like a God,and my friend and I asked him why he was playing on a bridge if he could play like that. He replied that he preferred the atmosphere on Hungerford Bridge to that in Jazz clubs.

Hi Margaret, was it big band, piano or what? Blues, swing?
Earl "fatha" Hines?
Antonio Carlos Jobim, not jazz but great. Stan Getz ( sax) played his compositions.
You could try here.

Maybe jog your memory! :)

Margaret: if you give us a clue, it would help. Instrument, for instance.

Chim, don't know where you are, but I bought a DAb addition for my Bose, to listen to "The Jazz" station.
Then they removed it. That's all I listened to :(

Snap!
Bl**dy pain.
Luckily, I've got a fairly big jazz collection - inherited my father's which was great, although he had a lot of stuff on 8-track which has been problematic in transferring. Luckily, my son has managed.

eek! All l remember was it was almost instrumental in that it had very few words, l'm sure it was a double barrelled name and when l looked him up on youtube there was the song on a tribute page, he was black and died a while ago.

The song was ace, as l said it almost sounded recent (unless someone had remastered it?).

It's really bugging me now l've GOT to find out who it was. Thansk for the wikipedia page ponky l've had a look and nothings jogging my memory yet...

Going to email the show, god l hope they don't read it out - oh look this twerp wants to know what song we played LAST YEAR....
