RESIGNATION LETTER FROM MAZMOD/MARQUEEMOON

Postby janz1956 » Thu Jan 24, 2008 7:40 pm

Here's your reason:

====================================================

Dear Leigh

Happy New Year! Best wishes for 2008 to you and all your colleagues at the Mirror.

I am writing this because I think it is finally time for me to stand down as a Moderator of the Forum. I am finding it increasingly hard to carry out this role for you for a number of reasons.

The main one is that I find there is a lack of consistency in the way that the board is moderated, with some posters being banned for relatively minor offences, while there are others thart can continually cause trouble by posting offensive comments or planting misinformation which seem to escape with a warning time and time again.

There is also I believe a lack of clarity in the terms and conditions as to what is and is not acceptable to post. The forum has for many months been subjected day in, day out to a continual barrage of cruel, entirely speculative gossip and bitching about the McCann family. It has been allowed to continue largely uncensored (though when some of the more harsher comments are removed we Moderators are accused of suppressing free speech). I recognise that we have been largely successful in removing most of those threads that are gratuitously designed to raise a laugh at the family'e expense and that change to the T&Cs was most welcome. However, in my opinion, there is still far too much that is allowed to remain on the board that is technically libellous (even if it never actually becomes the subject of any form of litigation). It's my view that forum members should be given much clearer guidelines as to what is and is not acceptable to post and that we as moderators should clamp down much harder on those posts which break these t&cs and be able to remove offending posters from the forum much more decisively.

Part of the problem with the forum is the "war" between the two camps known as the Pros and Antis. In many ways the forum has ceased to be about the Hunt For Maddy but has been taken over by the antagonism between these two sides. There is continual point-scoring, sniping, accusations and name-calling between these camps which, if the forum is to be taken seriously, really needs to be stamped out. I believe that there should be much greater clarity about what is and is not acceptable to be posted about other forum members. The terms "chimp", "troll" , accusations of being paid to post, etc - all of these appear with monotonous regularity and only serve to distract from the subject of the forum and to inflame antagonism between posters. We mods do our best to remove these comments but it's impossible to react to every single offensive comment. It would really help in my view if it is made crystal clear that anyone making any of these sorts of accusations or name-calling, or accusing Mods of bias etc will receive one warning only and then be banned from the forum permanently.

It also appears that many of the most aggressive and intimidating "Anti" posters now know that I am also the poster MarqueeMoon (known for having moderate "Pro" views) and this seems to have entirely compromised my credibility as a useful moderator of the board - any moderating decisions I make or any replies which are not to their liking are greeted with mockery and snide remarks by those posters. This is an aspect of the role that I occasionally find quite upsetting.

I do think that the "Hunt For Maddy" part of the forum currently reflects rather badly on the Mirror newspaper and I have felt an increasing amount of guilt and shame to actually be in a position of some responsibility about what appears on there. I agreed to become a Mod because (naively perhaps) I believed that I would be able to help improve the forum for the better, make it a less confrontational place, ensure that people who are not able to defend themselves are not libelled continuously or are the subject of baseless accusations and crazy speculation on a daily basis. Whilst the forum has improved in that it is no longer continually spammed with porn and advertising material, I think that it has actually changed for the worse in other ways, for the reasons already mentioned. So it is with regret that I ask you to remove me from the list of moderators and to also ask you to please research carefully before appointing someone to take my place. As you know there are many rather odd characters with strange agendas posting on this forum regularly and I would hate to think that my position as a Mod has been given to one of these individuals!

I hope that you will view these comments as constructive criticisms and not just ol' MazMod having another moan! I have invested a large amount of time and energy in this forum and in principle I think it is a fantastic arena in which people from all over the world can come together to debate and discuss the issues of the day. I care about how the forum is moderated and how it is used but unfortunately I can no longer give you that time and effort commitment all the while there are these issues that I believe urgently need addressing.

Regards

MazMod - what a disgrace! no wonder the Brownshirts were allowed to run rampant. I wonder if she's worked out yet the HTFM has shot itself in both feet over this.

Ah, the pros' pet troll.

Did she also used to post as 'mizmaz' at MF? I've seen comments about mizmaz in old threads, specifically about how virulent she was in the McCanns' defence and how horrible she was to antis.

I also noticed when I was looking at the "archived" MF threads that just around the time that she was made mod, the older threads from the Maddy forum were no longer being moved to the 'What Are You Talking About' forum for archiving. They were being completely deleted instead.

Perhaps that was a change in forum policy, but it is curious because the WAYTA forum has over 100 pages of threads, many of which are completely frivolous (and not Maddy-related). If it was a matter of saving space, it would have made more sense to delete silly threads than threads that had a lot of real info on them.

Particularly entertaining is the suggestion that the McCanns cannot answer back and have no voice.

This coming from a (slightly) pro moderator of a forum, of a newspaper that slavishly and unquestioningly prints any and every utterance from the Tartan camp as if it were handed down from on high.

Comedy gold.

I've just come online to be met with a full inbox and several threads regarding the Mirror Mods.

I'm not quite sure what has ignited this frenzy of speculation but can only ask that you all keep an open mind instead of jumping to conclusions based on rumour - difficult on the MF I know.

As most of you probably know Athel, Metta, Maz and myself are/were all volunteers, we do not work for the Mirror, we were specifically asked by Steve Purcell if we would consider giving some of our time to help Moderate the forum - which before our arrival was left, for the most part unmoderated.

Mirror Admin are fully aware of our real identities, home addresses etc. They are also fully aware of our past posting history and in their judgement decided that we would all be fair in our Modding duties.

The only information the Mods have available are IP addresses, of which most of you have in abundance - most are probably not your real IP's anyway hence the ability to get around bans so easily.

Virtually everything that the Mods do has to be sanctioned by Admin first. We can issue warnings and remove posts or threads but not ban anyone.

Actually that's not entirely true, only I am able to ban, but that's when Admin are not around and I have to give a full explanation for the banning. No other Mod can issue bans.

With regard to MazMod leaving, I can 100% guarantee that it was her decision to leave and in fact Admin were very reluctant to let her go and have left the door open for her to return is she so wishes. MazMod was not banned or 'sacked'!

I know some of you have issues with the Mods and I can only suggest that you do indeed take them up with Admin.

This has all been written rather quickly but I thought I'd write it here instead of attempting to reply to all the PM's I've received.

Thank you.
