Hi,

If you are having problems posting, and get an error mesage:

If you compose a post, before you press "preview" or "submit", just copy all of your text you have written first (press Ctrl and C).

If you get an error message, once you get back to the posting box, you can then paste it in again in the box (press Ctrl and V), and your text will magically appear without having to re-type it all in again.

Alternatively, if you just cant get on at all, paste it into a word doc or similar, and post it later.

Hope this helps!

Thats an excellent tip...and one thats saved me a lot of grief over the years!

I also like to copy along the way... I have cats that like to sit and stare at me while I'm on the pc, meanwhile their hindquarters have found a place at the right side of the keyboard that does a very quick job of deleting inspired comments! :|

Ohhh just to add...before you copy by pressing Ctrl and C you will need to highlight the text by pressing Ctrl and A

Alternative method is to LEFT CLICK and drag your mouse over the area you wish to copy and then RIGHT CLICK and COPY

OR

RIGHT CLICK and press SELECT ALL..RIGHT CLICK again and click COPY..

This works if you wish to copy a complete web page (3A or news article)

Just find where you want to store it and right click and press PASTE

GENERAL COMPUTER MAINTENANCE
(If your PC is running slow)

Visit this page for some help graphics
http://groups.msn.com/madeleinemccann/computerhelp.msnw

I'm certainly no expert.. but here are a few suggestions to either help get your PC back in working order and virus free..or keep it functioning without having to pay $$$$ for major repairs.

Repair shops love 'viruses'. Computers crash..they reinstall your operating system and charge you $300 or more!

It can usually be prevented by some general maintenance or at times of trouble and strife... downloading and running a few free anti virus programs

From Download.com (reputable).
(Be careful to click on the download provided and not one of the 'ads')

ADAWARE
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3 ... 45910.html
AVG
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus- ... 20142.html
AVAST
http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edit ... 19223.html

(Feel free to correct or improve on any of my suggestions)

GENERAL MAINTENANCE

(All of the files you will be deleting with these procedures will not affect the files you have saved, your pc 'saves' copies of everything you view and without deleting them can 'gum up' your pc and affect your ability to 'surf' etc)

1) DISK CLEANUP

Go to DESKTOP
Click on MY COMPUTER
RIGHT CLICK on 'C'
Click on PROPERTIES
Click on DISK CLEANUP
Click OK and delete files

2)SCANDISK

Keeping above window open click on TOOLS tab
Under 'Error Checking Status' Click on Check now. (Do a quick scan first and a thorough check after. If this is not completed the next step of 'Defragmenting' may not be possible)

3) DEFRAGMENTING

Click to defragment (Older OS systems may not defragment while any other programs including IE are running)

4) DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

Click on TOOLS at the top of an IE Window
Click on INTERNET OPTIONS
Click on DELETE FILES (under Temporary Internet Files heading)
Check and change timeframe for saving HISTORY and delete files if not needed for reference.

5)ELIMINATE UNNECESSARY START UP ITEMS

All items in the startup (usually indicated by an icon in taskbar bottom right) use up valuable memory causing it to run slow when use your computer. This memory is not to be confused with the memory available on the hard drive which I liken to a 'warehouse'. Start up items all running at once is kinda like having all appliances running in the kitchen at once but only using a couple of them. lol

START
RUN
Type msconfig into text box (inability to access 'startup' window can be an indication of a virus present)
Click on STARTUP ITEMS tab and uncheck any programs that you don't need available at every startup. (eg leave antivirus, messenger, firewall ..anything you use every time you reboot..all other programs can be easily accessed when required by clicking START - PROGRAMS )

Alternatively

Click on CONFIGURE on newer operating systems and follow directions

tick or untick the box under the quote ?
Other settings can be customised with user control panel (top right of this page) ..then board preferences...then edit settings, posting options and display (avatars on or off, filter bad language etc)

If you have poor eyesight, you can change/ enlarge fonts (I think..check with BJR how to do this) and turn avatars off

Hi de Ho ..Perhaps you could put these user control panel hints in more detail, step by step..thanks

I don't believe it's possible, but if you find someone who has, please point me in their direction.
Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

From what I can make out the bb code (or whatever) is not active for members in signatures.

Thats the code that allows for images and colour fonts etc.

It is probably a decision by admin to prevent extra usage of server or to eliminate theads becoming overwhelming.

Just a guess and if correct...understandable.

Hi, thank you very much for all your hints. Although I dont join much on debates here, I have been lurking on the MF since last year. I was wondering if anyone of you could give me a few meanings of the abbreviations you use when writing your opinions on the forum, like: IMO etc. I dont know what they mean - sorry but I'm learning.
thanks
