Detectives drove mum-of-seven Karen to her local police station in Dewsbury, West Yorks.
The decision to arrest her is understood to have followed a tip-off yesterday.

I have many thoughts on this whole sorry situation but I find the most peculiar is when Karen Matthews did her first appeal to camera. It appeared to me that she was directly pleading with Shannon to come home which in my mind did not fit with the apparent 'abduction'.

tbh I thought that was reasonable, at that age most children not coming home from school would be runaways of their own volition or hiding out at a friends house, abductions are very rare.

Perverting the course of Justice.............hmmmm Tip off???..............
Aren't we jumping the gun just a little. Could this ,with Meehan's sister and mother 's arrests be linked to the computer images alone. Just a thought.

Have been having similar thoughts while reading this thread, shoperoo. We haven't been told anything about what this charge is in relation to. I am fairly convinced that it will all come out in the wash though. Since this family are not well-educated, connected or privileged in any way.

Don't really understand your logic here, mm. Would you suggest that those who remain 'taken in by and sympathetic to the McCann crew' are suffering from straightforward snobbery?

What label would you apply to people who were either sceptical or blindly sympathetic in BOTH cases??

Fair comment Farfromthe... However, since the early reports suggested that Shannon was talking about running away and was unhappy at home, to which Karen Matthews denied, I would of thought that abduction, although rare, would of been the first thing to come to her mind. Her initial appeal would suggest otherwise.

If Shannon was happy at home she would not run away and if people thought she had been abducted then why would they appeal directly to Shannon to come home?

I'm not sure if I am explaining my thoughts clearly but the top and bottom of it is that to me, the first appeal seemed strange and did not fit the apparent circumstances.

I can't agree with you there, FarFromthe ....

A nine year old not returning home from school is most likely a runaway.... ? :?

Maybe if we were talking about a 14 year old, I'd agree with you, but not a little girl of nine.
Although of course abductions are rare ...

But they are much more likely to happen to a child walking home from school alone, than say a child tucked up in bed in a Portuguese apartment.

From when I hear the phone call to the police that Karen Matthews made I thought it all seemed fake and weird. Oh dear this has turned out to be one sorry mess (both the 'abduction' and then the child porn).

when I read that a 9 year old wants to stay with a foster family because she has a kitten which she loves, I suspect I am reading about a young girl who never had much love in her life up to now

Do you have stats to back that up, I can't believe there are more abductions of 9 year olds than 9 year olds simply making a statement, hiding after a family argument or a runaway?

I might be wrong though?
