Such a shame you can't hear the bands on here, they are wonderful.

I like the capuchones (nazarenos con capirote). some of them were barefoot and wearing chains. and it was freezing cold!

this procession took place on thursday and started in the church of misericordia, near ramblas de las flores. they started with some very nice horses.

the fraternities carry the pasos, wooden sculptures. most of them are carried by several men hidden inside. but some of the churches have difficulties to find enough men to carry the pasos - so they had wheels under the sculptures.

in several spanish cities it rained and the procession couldn't take place. I've seen many of the men and women of the fraternities weep on tv. if you see the big wooden sculptures, really old and priceless - you can't carry them through the rain.

in mallorca it was cold but it didn't rain.

the guys inside the pasos can't see, of course. there is always someone giving directions and make them march lock-step.

Lovely photos Lovemedo, thank you.

I will try to do a little research into this for you when I have time, in the meantime here are a few paragraphs from one of our local newspapers re the procession in Torreveija.
................

In Torrevieja the Internation Cofradia were on duty carrying the paso of Jesus in the Garden of Olives on both the Monday night parade and in the largest parade of all on the night of Good Friday.

The International Cofradia was and still is the first and only cofradia in Spain to be set up consisting purely of foreign residents. It must have been a gamble on the part of the Junta Mayo which is the main organising body of the Easter Parades when they offered the opportunity because they could not know how it would work out with the every different cultural and religious backg round of most of the costaleros. (the interntional paso is the one where everyone is wearing green shirts on my photos).

At the end of the parade many of the pasos are taken straight back to the Santa Semana museum.

......................

I am sure you too enjoyed your procession Lovemedo, they are quite spectacular and very moving events I think.

thank you.
I am not catholic but I was very touched to see the procession.
I've seen them first when I was a child, always in fear of the capuchones :P

in mallorca I saw them before the procession started and noticed for the first time how many of them were women. great!
