The mystery of Gurrinder Singh

If you have problems then perhaps one of the members might have a suggestion or tell you how they coped with a certain situation. Also we could post links for all children that are missing and need to be found. All aspects of child welfare discussed here, new and old cases. Children that have been let down by Social Services and the authorities.

Hoshiarpur (Punjab), Apr 2: The mystery of an abandoned Indian child, who was found in London, has deepened with another family in Punjab laying claim to him.

The family, which hails from a village in Hoshiarpur District, says Gurinder went missing in France when they were traveling from Singapore to France via Malaysia.

"Everybody in our village and relations have recognised the child as our Gurinder. We have all the certificates and photographs to prove that the child is ours. We appeal to the Indian Government that they help us get our child back," said Kuldeep Singh, who claimed to be Gurinder's uncle.

Last month, a family in Aurangabad, Bihar, had claimed Gurinder was their lost son Sintu, who had gone missing from March 3, 2005 while playing outside his house.

The Hoshiarpur family has gone ahead and lodged a missing persons report with the local police, and demanded that the boy be reunited with his family.

The family is even ready to undergo a DNA test to confirm the child's identity.

"We will convey to the higher authorities and accordingly further investigations would be carried out," said Varinder Kumar, a police official.

Gurrinder Singh, who speaks only Punjabi, was found alone in Southall, West London sometime in March, saying his uncle had not returned after leaving him at a bus stop.

Speaking through an interpreter, the nine-year-old told the police he had been living in a three-bedroom house with his uncle, described as white and in his 30s -- for two to three years. (ANI)

Has anyone found any updates on this case recently?
I spent much of last night contemplating the Shannon case and feel more and more suspicious of this story. How on earth could a young boy spend 2 years doing nothing but watch TV with a "white uncle" and not speak a word of English?
OK, it's not unheard of for Punjabi to be spoken by a white bloke, but unless Pingu was the only programme the boy was allowed to watch, he must have picked some English up. And what was the point of the whole exercise?
Help me out someone :?:

Just done a search for an update on this case, and - nothing.
This speaks realms to me. Why haven't we been told? What was this all about? Is it a case of having no news makes the issue go away? Does this mean there's something to hide?
More so; how do we find out?

Nothing, not even showing up on google news search now. I may phone Southall police at some point this week to try and gather a little more info, actually i will, i'll put it on my list it should only take a few minutes. I would imagine they will only be able to give me details of the social services involved, i would expect that will be ealing.

I'm sure social services will be able to provide me with some sort of update....will post as soon as i have any further details. Gonna log off and get number now for southall police.

Phoned Southall nick, no joy due to the data protection act. They could not even indicate if there had been a conclusion to the case, would not let me know which ss team it had been passed either. :(

Southall nick number 0208 246 1025 if anyone else wants to try.

Just found this....

Abandoned Southall boy's parents too scared to claim him
EmailPrintDownload PDFComments (0)
From correspondents in India, 01:01 PM IST

The parents of a 11-year-old boy found abandoned in London's Southall have not come forward to claim him as they are illegal immigrants afraid of deportation, says a man who describes himself as a relative.

'He is our child. We are sure about it. His parents are not coming forward to claim him as they are themselves illegal immigrants. We are ready for a DNA test,' Kuldip Singh, a farmer, told IANS. He said he was the boy's uncle.

The family - from Tanda Ram Sahay village, 40 km from the district headquarters here - is submitting an application to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) later Monday through Hoshiarpur MP Avinash Rai Khanna, claiming that the abandoned boy, Gurinder Singh, is their relative.

Khanna will submit the application to MEA on behalf of Kuldip Singh since his own father and mother - both of whom are abroad illegally - have not come forward to claim their son for fear of being caught and deported.

Gurinder, who the Hoshiarpur family claims is Gurinderjit Singh, was found abandoned at a Southall clinic March 18. His plight of being abandoned and knowing only Punjabi was highlighted extensively in the British media.

Southall is dominated by the Asian community, particularly by a large number of Sikh and Punjabi migrants settled there.

According to the family, his mother Deepinder Kaur, had illegally migrated to Malaysia last year with Gurinder and entered Britain illegally through France this March. They claimed that she must have abandoned the boy after entering Britain.

Deepinder had strained relations with her husband Mohinder Singh, the father of the boy, and was living separately in her native village Jalalpur near here for the last five years. The boy, born in April 1997, had studied in a school in Punjab before his mother took him away.

The family did not wish to disclose Mohinder's whereabouts except to say he was in a European country as an illegal immigrant.

The MEA is likely to forward the application to the Indian High Commission in London to contact British authorities regarding the family's claim here. The British police have already said that the boy, who is presently in the custody of social activists in Southall, will be handed over to anyone only after a DNA test.

Khanna said 'I am forwarding their case as I feel that their claim seems genuine.'

Dated april 7th

Thank you for trying SS buglugs, it is understandable that no information could be given but it is sad that we will probably never know Gurrinder's future; poor lad, must be so confused.

http://www.nerve.in/news:253500139680

London, April 6 - A British newspaper said Sunday it has established the parentage of a nine-year-old Sikh boy found abandoned in London recently.

The Mail on Sunday said its investigations showed the child, Gurinderjit Singh, comes from a family in Jalalpur in the state of Punjab.

The child, who does not speak English, turned up at a health clinic in the London suburb of Southall last month saying he had been dumped at a bus stop by a 'white uncle' with whom he had lived for three years.

Photographs of the boy, splashed on newspaper, internet and television reports, triggered a global search for his parents, including a joint hunt by police in India, Scotland Yard and the Indian High Commission in London.

Two families have laid claim to the boy - one from Bihar and the other from Punjab, and the Mail on Sunday said its investigations backed up the claim from Punjab.

It said the boy was left in Southall, home to a large Sikh population, probably by relatives to give him a better chance in life.

Gurinderjit was taken abroad in October when his mother Deepinder left home to look for work after the breakdown of her marriage, his grandmother told the paper in India.

His birth certificate shows that Gurinderjit was born April 21, 1997 - making him around the same age as the boy in London.

Grandmother Gurbachah Kaur said, 'I've seen the photo. He's definitely my grandson. This is terribly upsetting.'

Kaur has not spoken to Deepinder since November.

MP Avinash Rai Khanna said: 'Gurinderjit and the Punjabi boy in London would seem to be the same person.'

With the abandoned boy now living with foster parents, police in London have not said anything beyond the fact that they were liasing with Indian authorities.
