I don't know why all this suffering of poor children is happening in this day and age. There seems to be a lot more real poverty now, something is wrong. It is always the most vunerable that it affects, the elderly, children, the sick and disabled, even pets are being abandoned in record levels now. There is a sickness in this world.

.
Heartbreaking.

A 7 year old would surely have been in school and if not, why weren't Social Services involved?

I think that a display in the media on types of child neglect should be printed. Then the Public would be more inclined to act and support the children. Not the Parents.

Types of Child Neglect should be drummed in alot more often. SICK POEPLE who live around us.

How utterly tragic. Those poor children.

Was this family living in an isolated or very rural area? If not, then why on earth did nobody come forward...surely a neighbour would have noticed that something was not right.
Why is everyone so afraid to come forward in this day and age? People don't even blink an eye when they see poor suffering souls; they step over them or look the other way.

These people make me sick . My heart goes out to any woman who through no fault of their own cant have children and then you get the likes of these people who bring them into the world to treat them in that way . Jailed for life is what the pair of them need !

I agree there is more poverty around - the 90's saw some people get very rich but not that many. Even those people who bought their own homes and thought that brought safety are realising that it is the mega-rich bankers who really rule the roost.

BUT

I don't think poverty is directly connected to neglect. I have seen many, many very poor parents spend more time (and even money) on their children than some rich people would even consider possible. Neglect is simply selfishness writ large.

Poverty or not - most parents without much money would rather feed their children and go without themselves if push came to shove. I know I would

Poverty is not an excuse to neglect your children

Added to Sky News:

Reports suggest the children were discovered lying on mattresses. The other children showed signs of emaciation and are now thought to be in hospital.

Birmingham City Council spokesman said: "We are deeply saddened by the death of this child and our sympathies go to the child's family and friends at this difficult time.

"This death is now the subject of a police enquiry and the council is fully supporting their investigation. As a result we are unable to make any further comment."

I agree about the poverty issue and neglect. It doesn't always go hand in hand.
