The child's father was worried that his wife was suffering from depression and the baby's life might be in danger.
The six month old baby, who was thrown off the coast of Fuerteventura on Wednesday afternoon, has died. The child had been admitted in a critical condition to the Insular Hospital on Gran Canaria in a critical condition after suffering a blow to the head.

The child's 36 year old mother remains in the custody of the psychiatric unit of the Guardia Civil in Fuerteventura, reported to be suffering from a severe case of post-natal depression.

Reports say the mother threw the baby from a ten metre high cliff. The child's father had apparently tried to get the mother to admit herself to hospital and to take the baby away from her.

This is so, so sad, its obvious the mother was suffering from post natel deppression, what a real tragic shame that she didnt get the help before it came to this.
If she does get help this poor women is going to have to live with what she has done forever, so tragic.

There is a more severe form of Post-Natal depression - it is not checked more for. A lot of women addmitted into hospital have this more severe form. It is a tragedy that this afflicts new mothers. I met one in hospital and she was convinced her baby was ill and dying. Her mother cared for it and brought it into hospital to see her. There was no Mother and Baby units available at that time and doubt if there is now. She was really very very ill and totally unable to cope outside. But she did recover cos I saw her months later with another babe as well. But mental hospital is not a nice place to be. This case is very sad.
